Aakhon Mein Teri Ajab Si Ajab Si Adayen Hain

Singer: KK
Music: Vishal Shekhar
Year: 2007
Movie: Om Shanti Om

Continuing with my postings of compositions by pair of Music directors here I present to you all my latest humble offering for your esteemed ears - "Aakhon Mein Teri" popularly known as "Ajab Si Ajab Si".

It has been sung by K.K. who happens to be one of the most amazing yet underrated singers in the country. This song comes to Shah Rukh Khan’s mind whenever he sees Deepika Padukone in his home production, Om Shanti Om directed by Farah Khan. This film had a very interesting song which featured 31 Stars of Bollywood both past and present but thats for another day another time.

The composition done by Vishal Shekhar in this movie has a touch of the early 70's as well as modern days and compliments Javed Akhtar's beautiful lyrics. This song has become a rage both in India as well as amongst Indians all over the world.

As always your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain

Singer: Kumar Sanu
Music: Nadeem Shravan
Year: 1997
Movie: Pardes

Kumar Sanu sings Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain(Two Souls coming together) in Pardes when Rajiv meets Ganga. The moment is beautifully captured in the lyrics of Late Anand Bakshi and through one of the very best of tunes Nadeem-Shravan ever produced accompanied with the music. One beautiful note of guitar is continuous throughout the song which is none less than fabulous. Each and every instrument in deliberately and wonderfully utilized.

Pardes is a very simple story about a young, Indian born girl who is betrothed by her parents to the son of a very rich NRI. The NRI (Amrish Puri) hopes his soon-to-be bahu will instill some Indian values in his extremely westernized beta. Ganga (Mahima Chawdhry), our village-bred heroine, must contend with the culture shock that she faces upon arrival in the United States. And for a bit of spice, everyone must contend with Arjun (Shahrukh Khan), the NRI's adopted son, creating a love triangle in the proceedings.

I have rendered this song not consciously trying to copy anyone but have tried to sing it the way I have learnt to love it. Hope you all will like it too. As always your feedback is very much welcome.

Tum Ho Mere Dil Ki Dhadhkan

Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music: R D Burman
Year: 1979
Movie: Manzil

Manzil, a film from the 70s, stars Amitabh Bachchan and Maushami Chatterjee. It is a story about an ambitious and aspiring entrepreneur salesman, Amitabh, who has a simultaneous love interest with a rich girl, Maushami. The film is probably one of Amitabh's best (building galvanometers, reading physics book, sales / repair man). Maushami is at her best in this film, being a sweet and naive girl who loves him for who he is and not for his apparent success. The song Rim Jhim Gire Saawan ... sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishor Kumar is one of the best rain songs ever. It is decently filmed, the director Basu Chaterjee wouldn't have done it better. The movie portrays reality and teaches a lesson in values, and it is a must-see for everyone, especially aspiring and ambitious young men who have simultaneous love interest.

"Tum ho mere dil ki dhadkan" a love song in the film Manzil which roughly translates 'You are my Heart Beat' and is a beautiful and soulful composition by Panchamda and the love portrayed in the words is supplemented by the music. The first recording which I posted on my blog was the other song from this film "Rim Jhim Gire Saawan".

Here I present my own rendition of this soulful melody for your kind ears. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Mai Koi Aisa Geet Gaaun

Singer: Abhijit
Music: Jatin Lalit
Year: 1997
Movie: Yes Boss

Mai Koi Aisa Geet
Ki aarzoo jagaoon
Agar tum kaho…

When I think of this song, I can easily visualize young Shahrukh jumping and dancing around Juhi Chawala, who is wearing one of her classical patented frock. The song belongs to movie Yes Boss, a very hilarious hit by none other than Aziz Mirza. I must have seen the movie n number of times without getting tired both in Cinema Halls and on TV. It was 1997, the song fetched many awards including Best Singer Award for Abhijit and Best Lyricist Award to Javed Akhtar. After a very long time the movie was a delight and the songs were catchy, full of life and very very lively.

This song is all about what a woman would want her man to do to woo her... Ooops... am I sounding outdated. Times may change and stars may change their pace, Sun may start revolving round the earth… but a woman…ahem ahem…she would certainly like her man to sing a song for her… write a poem, paint a canvass… and treat her like a princess and that’s how the song flows… Kadam Tum Jahan Jahan Rakho…

Pehla Nasha
Singer: Sadhna Sargam & Udit Narayan
Music: Jatin Lalit
Year: 1992
Movie: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar

This cool Jatin-Lalit tune is like a gentle waterfall. It follows the rhythms of a gradual awakening to first love.
Aamir's eyes evocatively capture the faraway look of a teenager experiencing love. Shot in slow motion and choreographed with the care of a debutante (Farah Khan), the images of Aamir leaping in the air or jubilantly throwing away his cap and Pooja Bedi in the red dress a la Marilyn Monroe, are etched in memory.
That Aamir desires Pooja Bedi while a deluded Ayesha Jhulka thinks that Aamir is exultant because he has discovered his love for her, gives the song a bittersweet feel.

Friends I introduce Pooja who is from Canada and has beautifully rendered the part which was sang originally by Sadhna Sargam.

This is our first duet together so there are bound to be some mistakes. Please keep your feedbacks coming and I promise we will improve upon this in our future endeavors.

Baat Niklegi to Phir
Singer: Jagjit Singh
Music: Jagjit Singh
Year: 1976
Album: The Unforgettables

This Nazm has descended from the kalam of Kafeel Azer and Jagjit Singh gave music and lend his voice to it in 1976 for his first LP album recorded for HMV.

There was a time, when the rendition of Ghazals were restricted to maestros like Noor Jahan, Malika Pukhraj, Begum Akhtar, and Mehdi Hassan. The success of 'The Unforgettables' in 1976 redefined ‘Ghazal Gaiki’. It had a new feeling, fresh sounds and melodic lyrics. It was the contemporary face of Indian Ghazal Gaiki which became popular with the masses. Skeptics had their own reservations, purists scorned at it but the audience loved the songs immensely. Jagjit Singh single handedly changed the course of this genre of music known as Ghazals making it more ear friendly, melodic and mass oriented without poaching on the purity. His singing has inventiveness, vision, imagination and innovation.

I have always been a big fan of Jagjit Singh. My liking for his songs has a long history. I heard him for the first time in 1981 and have hummed his compositions ever since. Those days we lived in Kolkata and I could not even comprehend or speak Hindi. In 1983, our family relocated to Northern India and I got a chance to learn Hindi. Mirza Ghalib, the TV serial, with Jagjit Singh’s Music and his rendered ghazals mesmerised the entire nation at that time. I was hooked to his voice and tried collecting his albums from wherever I could lay my hands on.

Baat Niklegi was the first Ghazal I learnt and now have been singing it for over seventeen years. The song has meaning and depth and its music has haunted my soul for years.

Here I present my rendition of the same for your kind ears, with the hope that you will enjoy hearing it as much as I enjoy singing.

Phir Wahi Raat

Movie: Ghar
Year: 1978
Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music: R. D. Burman

Manik Chatterjee's 1978 portrait of a marriage through good times and bad stars Vinod Mehra and Rekha as Vikas and Aarti, an adoring young couple whose lives are shattered by a random, brutal assault.

Panchamda scored some of his best music till date for this movie with the Legendary Lata Mangeshkar lending her voice to few of the most beautiful compositions ever done in Indian cinema in "Tere Bina Jiya Jaaye Na", "Aajkal Paon Zameen Par" and "Aap Ki Aankhon Mein" with Kishore Kumar.

The song "Phir Wahi Raat Hai" is a romantic number very beautifully rendered by Kishore Kumar in his inmitable style and doing justice to the music by Panchamda.

Here I present for your kind ears my own rendition of the same song and as always a feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Mai Shayar To Nahi

    Movie : Bobby
    Year : 1973
    Singer: Shailendra Singh
    Music : Laxmikant Pyarelal

Raj Kapoor's, "Bobby" has become one of the pivotal movies of Bollywood cinema. The film's catch phrase was "A Teenager's Love Story" and it was a runaway hit at the box office.
The story of "Bobby" was nothing new. Rich man's son falls in love with a 'fish mongers' daughter and against parental adversity the teenagers prove that 'love conquers all'. What is astounding about this film is the freshness of the performances by the two lead actors, Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor. There is a compelling magnetism about the naive portrayals of Dimple and Rishi amid the baroque sets and melodramatic histrionics that is hypnotizing.

The song, ‘Main Shaayar to Nahin’ is a melody with character and superiorly crafted. Treated grandly with slow violins, powerful guitar refrains, and innumerable emotional flourishes and set to a waltzish tempo, this number wins with its enchanting tune and lyrics. Shailendra Singh renders admirably.

Here I present this for your ears with the hope that you will enjoy this as much as my earlier renditions.

    Hume Tumse Pyar Kitna

    Movie : Kudrat
    Year : 1981
    Singer: Kishore Kumar
    Music : R D Burman

Truly, can one ever measure how much they love their dear one? All the lover feels is that life itself would end if their beloved were to go away. This song from the film, Kudrat, emotes the infinite love Rajesh Khanna feels for his beloved Hema Malini. The result is the build up of intrigue, suspense and mystery in the plot, involving reincarnation, timeless and all-encompassing enduring love. Composed by RD Burman, this is arguably one of the most romantic songs Kishore da has sung. Pancham da has also created the same song with a decidedly semi-classical touch, in the voice of hindustani classical powerhouse, Begum Parveen Sultana. Pulling notes from Raga Bhairavi, Pancham da has changed the essence of this song between the two artists.

Kishore Kumar was known for very many songs in his historical rule of Bollywood film music for decades. When a song was picturized on a high-calibre "hero" like Amitabh Bachchan or Rajesh Khanna, Kishore da came in to lend voice to the actor's emotions, making women's hearts swoon and men's minds nostalgic. His genius was in his versatility and adaptability, while keeping the true masculine essence of his voice intact, even if the song was picturized on a sister, or in contrast, on a lover. I have attempted yet again to give homage to my mentor, Kishore da, and I present this to you with the hope that you enjoy it.

    Kuchh Na Kaho

    Movie: 1942 A Love Story
    Music: R.D.Burman
    Singer: Kumar Sanu

When one falls in love, words are not necessary...Each moment passes by in slow motion and yet it's gone too soon. In moments like these, words are lost and the warmth of one's lover's smile is the only thing before lovestruck eyes...
In the film 1942: A Love Story, R.D.Burman reminded us once again why he was considered genius in his talent. This was a gorgeously composed and picturized song showcasing the love between the characters of Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala.
I have done my own rendition of this immortal tune which tends to remain on your lips long after the music stops.....

    Movie: Jism
    Music: M M Kreem
    Singer: Kay Kay

Following my other renditions of pathos-filled songs, I present yet another from a newer film named Jism. This is a pull-at-your-heartstrings song by Kay Kay, picturized on one of Bollywood's leading heartthrobs, John Abraham. In this song I have tried to evoke the sadness and emotional emptiness that the character feels in this film. My hope is that you too will enjoy hearing this as much as I have enjoyed singing it.

Kishore Kumar's voice coupled with Panchamda's music made this song a classic to be revered and loved by every generation alike. This song is the epitome of pain that has been conjured up in the lyrics and the music and equally well emoted by Rajesh Khanna at the height of his career.

    Chanda O Chanda
    Year: 1971
    Movie: Lakhon Mein Ek
    Music: RD Burman
    Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
    Singers: Kishore Kumar/Lata Mangeshkar

A beautiful song composed by Pancham, which is different from many of his compositions due to the fact that the emphasis is more on the voices rather than the music. This song has two versions, one each by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.

I am presenting here the version by Kishore Kumar, who keeping the tone and tune of the song intact gave this one his own style making this one as immortal as all his others with RD.

The track is a scale lower than the original so it might sound a bit demure but I have tried to keep the flavor of the original hope you all will like it. As always comments and feedback are very much welcome.

A beautiful composition by M M Kreem and equally beautifully sung by Kay Kay from the film "ROG" released in 2005.

Hope you all would like my version of the song.
